Interview Presentation Tips That Make You Stand Out

Getting the interview is a reason to celebrate, but then comes another challenge: the interview presentation. Interview presentations are a way for the employer to test your suitability for the role. By preparing and delivering a presentation for the interview panel, the company can get a feel for who you are as a candidate, and whether the role is right for you.

Tip #1: Research to Impress

Familiarize yourself with the company to better understand how to tailor your presentation. For a higher-level role, company executives or board representatives would typically be your audience. The more information you gather about their background could help make your talk more impactful, which increases your chances of getting the job.

Tip #2: Create an All-Star Presentation

The secret to a great presentation is to create a product that shows how to use your skills to produce impressive results. Find the structure that will keep your audience the most engaged. According to Indeed, “A good presentation contains a catchy introduction, compelling information, and a strong conclusion.”

Focus on what the employer asks to see in your presentation, then build an exciting narrative from there. While organizing each slide, remember that less is more: 65% of people are visual learners. Find the right balance of text and visuals to convey a key point that resonates with the interviewer.

Tip #3: When in Doubt, Content is King

Windows users may be more familiar with PowerPoint and Prezi, while Mac users may be more familiar with Keynote and Google Slides. Either way, one of these software options can do the trick. To maximize your time, focus on which software program you’re the most familiar with to make your content shine.

Pros:

Cons:

PowerPoint

  • Pre-designed visuals available
  • Add and edit video directly on the slide
  • Audio included
  • Not free for users
  • Software may overwhelm beginners
  • Applicants may find it challenging to illustrate complex ideas on software

Prezi

  • Free to use
  • Attractive visual options
  • Visuals can distract away from content during a presentation
  • Cannot add audio

Keynote

  • Free usage and offline access
  • Impressive aesthetics
  • User-friendly
  • Only available for Mac users
  • Files can get too large and create slow processing

Google Slides

  • Software is free with a Google account
  • Users can import animations and videos on their slides
  • Has fewer themes than Prezi and PowerPoint
  • Online storage is limited

Tip #4: Tell a Great Story

Storytelling is the key to winning your audience’s attention. Whether you’re simulating a project or discussing a technical topic, walk the audience through your thought process. Keep your audience hooked with passion and energy throughout your presentation, like Steve Jobs during his keynote address for the first iPhone launch.

Tip #5: Preparation is Key

Practice presenting several times leading up to the interview date. After more practice, try presenting without notes or reading a script. Articulate your words with confidence and authority, but don’t forget to take a deep breath. In case there are tech issues while presenting, bring your laptop and printed slides as a backup.

Pro Tip: Identify key points to expand on during your presentation for a natural flow when speaking.

#6: Leave an Impression of Who You Are and Why They Should Hire You

Summarize your key points at the end of the presentation in a compelling way. Read a quote, recommend solutions, or highlight milestones that could resonate. Finish strong by opening up the floor for questions, and don’t be afraid to answer with confidence. At the end of the day, this interview presentation is for a purpose: getting you hired.
