Top Interview Questions (and Answers) for Construction Project Managers

By John Ternieden - August 2nd, 2024
Industry Insights

Since 2021, the construction industry has experienced a surge of activity, offering many opportunities for qualified project managers. That said, the most sought-after positions get lots of applicants. If you want to land a great role as a construction project manager, you’ll need to use your interview to showcase your leadership capabilities and relevant skills.

Here are ten interview questions you’re likely to face, along with examples of how you should respond to those questions.

1. How do you handle tight deadlines on construction projects?

Successfully prioritizing tasks and delegating responsibilities are two of the most important skills a project manager must possess. During projects with many tight, competing deadlines, I’ve learned to access and prioritize those that are most important. I also make sure to delegate tasks to those most reliable and capable to help spread the workload, while making sure to check in and communicate with team members to identify bottlenecks and quickly address problems.

2. How do you ensure that you are delegating effectively?

I ensure effective delegation by first understanding the strengths and weaknesses of my team members. This allows me to assign tasks that align with their skills and abilities. I also set clear expectations and deadlines to ensure accountability. Additionally, I use project management tools to track progress and hold regular check-ins to address any issues early on. This approach helps in maintaining high standards of work while fostering a sense of ownership among the team.

3. How do you manage project budgets and control costs?

In my experience, managing budgets and controlling costs start with accurate initial investments and diligent monitoring throughout the entirety of the project. But rather than relying only on written accounting and spreadsheets, I leverage project management software to track all project expenses and forecast costs. I also try and leverage my relationships with vendors and suppliers to negotiate better rates and reduce spending.

4. Describe your experience handling RFIs and change orders.

I've managed numerous projects where handling RFIs and change orders were a constant element. I prioritize clear and timely communication to address RFIs, ensuring that all project stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and subcontractors, have the information needed to avoid delays. For change orders, I assess the impact on the project scope, budget, and timeline. I negotiate with all relevant parties to find the most efficient solution, document the changes accurately, and communicate these to everyone involved. This experience has honed my ability to smoothly navigate project adjustments while minimizing disruptions.

5. Can you describe a recent construction project you managed?

I just recently managed an office building project with a $15 million budget and a 2-year timeline. The project required me to manage subcontractors, handle supply chain delays, and oversee compliance with local regulations and codes. I put together a detailed project plan that not only allowed us to complete the project ahead of schedule, but $1 million under budget. The client was very satisfied with the outcome, which led to additional contracts for future projects.

6. How do you keep your team motivated?

I foster a positive work environment where each team member’s contribution is valued. I set clear goals and celebrate milestones, no matter how small, to give everyone a sense of achievement. I also encourage open communication and provide opportunities for professional growth through training and challenging assignments. By showing trust and respect, and by being approachable as a leader, I help maintain high morale and motivation within the team.

7. What is your approach to delivering constructive feedback?

I ensure that feedback is timely and specific, focusing on actions rather than the individual. I provide it in a way that is clear and actionable, and I always offer support and guidance on how to improve. Additionally, I encourage a two-way dialogue, allowing team members to express their perspectives and concerns. This method not only helps in addressing immediate issues but also contributes to the professional growth of the team members.

8. Can you describe what project management tools and software you use?

I’m proficient in several different project management tools, including MS Project, Primavera P6, and Procore. I use these tools to create detailed schedules, track progress, manage budgets, and communicate with my team and key stakeholders.

9. How do you ensure safety on a construction site?

Without question, safety is a top priority on any job site — and always remains top of mind while I oversee projects. I always ensure all those involved on a project are trained in safety protocols. I also conduct regular safety audits and ensure that tools and equipment are routinely inspected and maintained.

10. How do you keep abreast of the latest industry trends and regulations?

I make it a standard practice to regularly attend industry conferences and seminars and participate in professional associations. In doing so, I remain up to date on the latest industry trends. I also subscribe to many construction management publications that routinely discuss the latest regulations I should be aware of.
